The story of Team Watson

In mid-February, we noticed that Amanda was dragging her left leg. Within a week, she had lost significant strength on the left side of her body. We went to the Dell Children's Hospital ER in Austin, TX on February 27. An MRI showed a tumor the size of a walnut located at the base of her brain stem right above her spinal cord. She had surgery on March 1 and Dr. George was only able to remove 1/3 of the tumor because of the delicate location. Amanda was diagnosed with a grade 3 brain tumor. She completed a 6 week regimen of radiation and chemotherapy, followed by a four week rest period. She then had another MRI which showed that the tumor had shrunk significantly. Praising God for the positive reaction to the radiation, we started a one year chemotherapy plan.
Amanda showed wonderful progress throughout the chemo treatment, even at one point receiving a non-active tumor status, but during the last two cycles, symptoms returned and her MRI at the completion of the chemotherapy showed that the tumor was growing. At that point we were out of medical options to actively fight the cancer.

On August 6, 2014, 17 months after her initial diagnosis, Amanda's brave fight with cancer ended. The day she passed, Amanda shared with us what she saw as she entered heaven. What a beautiful and gracious gift from our heavenly Father. As most parents would agree, we all like to know that our children arrive safely at their destination. God blessed us by allowing us to drop our daughter off at the gates of heaven.
